Chapter 2

From the shadows, Cinder watched the heartbroken Io gather his things and leave the kitchen. It pained him so to see the one who filled his world with such light become lost, alone and depressed, knowing he was the responsible party behind it all. Cinder wanted nothing more than to run after Io, gather him up and take him to bed. Hell, he would have settled for a rough, clothes tearing, primal quickie right there in the kitchen. The passionate, ecstasy, soul feeding lovemaking could always come after.

But his phone rang.

Anyone else would have ignored it, put off business until they had a little fun first, and he happily would have been that kind of person. If it hadn’t been of such importance and the sort of thing he couldn’t share with Io. Keeping secrets from his lover, it turned out, didn’t sit well with him, the lie a crack between them he saw growing wider every night. Of course, some might say the easy thing to do would be for him to lay down his cards, reveal what he kept concealed, be open and honest. The ship had already sailed on the last part. After two months he saw no easy way to fess up without their being a fight.

“Are you listening to me, Cinder?” the voice on the other end asked, a touch impatient.

With one last thought of remorse for the fun that could’ve been, Cinder crossed to his study, closing and locking the door. “Sorry, I was making sure we wouldn’t be overheard.”

“Would it be easier to conduct our business in person?”

“No,” Cinder practically shouted. He sank into the plush office chair, opening his laptop, calling up a password window. “I think, all things considered, this is better. I can’t risk him seeing us together. He’ll start asking uncomfortable questions.”

“You will have to tell him eventually.”

Cinder sighed, his gaze straying to the closed door, then lowering to the single framed photo on his desk. He stood with his arm around Io’s waist, the hulking figure of Blackstone Manor in the background. The renovation of the property was nearly complete. He had paid through the teeth to have the manor restored to as close to original as possible, factoring in a number of modern conveniences. For him it was like slipping back a few decades, or maybe more like a century, the character of Blackstone reminding him of simpler times.

“Is there some other pressing engagement on your mind, dear boy?”

Cinder realized he had spaced out again. in one quick motion he flipped the picture face down on the desk. Even though it was just a photo, he couldn’t shake the sensation that Io was staring accusingly at him. He already felt bad enough about how terribly he was handling things. “Nothing is more important than this, please continue. Am I to assume that this call means you’ve managed to track down the package?”

The male voice on the other end cleared his throat. There came the sound of shuffling papers.
